daniel drumz – electric relaxation vol. 1 [download]

Daniel Drumz - Electric Relaxation vol. 1 coverEver since DJ Proces (what up Kamil!) introduced me to DJ 600V’s album Szejsetkilovolt in the late 90s I’ve been amazed by Polish beat-music: Noon, CMY, Kixnare and ofcourse Daniel Drumz. While I was listening to the first ever mix I heard by Drumz, 2006′s Electric Relaxation, I decided to check out his website and saw he put an MP3 version of it up for free!

Because Europe is a patchwork of medium-sized countries, has the Euro, the European Union and all that, it’s easy to forget that all these countries have their own signature sound. Germany must be the frontrunner on being most hardcore, the French always dropped fresh styles, the Swiss and Austrians were a bit more on the jazzy tip and the UK has always been a bit more electronic-minded. But who ever thought that the Polish had the most laid-back and funky vibe?

It seems the vodka-chuggers have a knack for everything in the beat-world that is just a little bit funkier, has a little bit more soul and basically just goes a tad deeper. Daniel Drumz’s “Electric Relaxation” is a prime example of the style, the groove and the skills these Eastern-Europeans possess.

Smooth blends, fitting mash-ups and a laid-back choice in records is what this mix brought ever since it came out in 2006. Picking some of the most soothing and cheerful hip hop and blending it with a couple of local tracks, jazz-hop and remakes, this set makes for perfect listening when it’s time to sit back at sundown, grab another drink and just kick it with your best pals. The mix is usually classified as hip hop but the majority of the music is way more jazz and soul infused. So much that even the most rap-haters will find themselves head-nodding a couple of minutes into the set.

Not convinced yet? Think jazz-guitar licks, rhodes, shuffled drums, minimalistic but deep basslines, 80s funk synths, and combine that with sweet soft vocalism and some easy floating verses. Heads will definitely get a proper idea of the vibe by just looking at the tracklist, and to everyone else I’d like to say: Just hit play. The Soundcloud player has a download button for a high-quality version of the mix, Mixcloud lovers can check it out here. Tracklist below the mix:
